{"id":2005,"date":"2023-01-24T13:50:44","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T13:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crobuzz.mingor.hr\/hoverfly-taxonomy-course\/"},"modified":"2023-01-24T14:24:38","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T14:24:38","slug":"hoverfly-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crobuzz.mingor.hr\/en\/hoverfly-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Hoverfly taxonomy course"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spent the last week in Novi Sad, attending the advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/crobuzz.mingor.hr\/en\/pollinators-on-the-edge-the-european-red-list-of-hoverflies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hoverfly<\/a> identification course, organized within the European project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufz.de\/spring-pollination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SPRING<\/a>. The organizers of this course are a <a href=\"https:\/\/spas.pmf.uns.ac.rs\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">group<\/a> of over 10 hoverfly researchers from the Department of Biology and Ecology of the University of Novi Sad. Long term, these courses aim to increase the number of hoverfly experts in Europe, which is critical for the successful establishment of <a href=\"https:\/\/wikis.ec.europa.eu\/pages\/viewpage.action?pageId=23462107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU Pollinator Monitoring<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>One of the main goals of this course was learning the taxonomically \u201cdifficult\u201d genera, where species identification is not exactly trivial. Throughout the week, we learned about these complex, but interesting, and beautiful genera, such as <em>Cheilosia<\/em>, <em>Chrysotoxum<\/em>, <em>Eumerus<\/em>, <em>Merodon<\/em>, <em>Paragus<\/em>, <em>Platycheirus<\/em> \u2026 &#8211; in which different species often look remarkably similar. Nevertheless, everything seemed possible under the expert guidance of our enthusiastic teachers and in the good company of other students, about 10 pollinator lovers from across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>During the week, in addition to the course, our instructors found time to help us with Cro Buzz Klima hoverfly samples and teach us some new lab skills important for species identification. In addition to all that work, our hosts and fellow attendees were also excellent company.
